What is leaky gut syndrome?

  • Answer: Leaky gut syndrome means that, due to the lining damage in the intestines, there is increased permeability within them. A result of this enhanced permeability in the gastrointestinal tract allows undigested food particles, toxins, and microbes to ‘leak’ into the blood flow and initiate an inflammatory response and other health problems.

What are the symptoms of leaky gut syndrome?

  • Answer: The most common symptoms include bloating, gassiness, diarrhea, food sensitivities, fatigue, and joint pain. The less obvious symptoms include brain fog, skin issues, and other autoimmune disorders.

How is leaky gut syndrome determined?

  • Answer: It is not determined by conventional means as it’s not a widely known phenomenon in the medical world. Leaky gut syndrome refers to many diseases and disorders that are more commonly known such as celiac disease, Chron’s disease, SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth), and IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Candida overgrowth plays a primary part in general gastrointestinal problems and is the main culprit of leaky gut syndrome.

What are the treatment options for leaky gut syndrome?

  • Answer: The treatments typically involve dietary modifications, and avoidance of gluten, sugar, and processed foods. Since these foods feed both bad gut bacteria and Candida albicans, avoiding consuming them while supplementing with probiotics, and L-glutamine and eating a clean diet is highly recommended.

What natural remedies can help with leaky gut syndrome?

  • Answer: Natural remedies include adopting a nutrient-dense diet (foods high in nutrients) that contains anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties in foods such as garlic, ginger, turmeric, coconut oil, and many more. Herbal drinks and teas also help with soothing an inflamed gut.

Are there specific diets recommended for leaky gut syndrome?

  • Answer: Diets with the most interest among people suffering from leaky gut syndrome include the Specific Carbohydrate Diet, the Anti-Candida Diet, and the Autoimmune Protocol diet (better known as the low-FODMAP diet). Most diets today are inflammatory since they contain much-processed foods and are high in added sugar that bad gut bacteria and Candida albicans love so much. Going on an elimination diet is the best option for dealing with leaky gut syndrome while you slowly support your gut with probiotics and healthy eating habits.

Can supplements support gut health?

  • Answer: Absolutely, supplements such as L-glutamine, probiotics, zinc, and digestive enzymes bring positive impacts on gut health and support healing. However, it is best to eat clean while your immune system and good gut bacteria slowly build up again.

How does stress affect gut health?

  • Answer: Long-term stress most definitely upsets the gut flora balance, increasing inflammation and decreasing gut barrier function. Anxiety also affects the gut adversely due to the connection between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract: better known as the gut-brain axis.

What lifestyle changes can improve gut health?

  • Answer: The lifestyle changes that without question improve gut health are: adopting a balanced diet, hydration, stress management, and eliminating both smoking and excessive alcohol drinking behaviors.

Where can I find more information about natural health and remedies?

  • Answer: Well, you have come to the right place. Apart from this site, I highly recommend you find reputable authors within the holistic/naturopathic communities who advocate the natural use of healing rather than just the conventional use of medicine. PubMed and NCBI also provide excellent research tools and studies for anyone to read.
